The following table provides the heaviest approximate weight per linear foot of pressure-treated lumber that you are likely to find. There are a few different sub-species of southern yellow pine, with different wood densities. We used the longleaf variety to calculate the values shown below. See Weight of Dimensional Lumber for the weights of other wood species commonly used for lumber. Pressure-treated lumber is produced by using high pressure to force a solution of water and chemical preservatives deep into the wood.
Stacks of lumber are placed in a large steel cylinder in a bath of water and preservative. This tank is pressurized until the wood becomes saturated. After the wood dries out, the preservative remains throughout the wood, protecting it from decay for years.Fuel filter 03 ford f 150
The noticeable extra weight of pressure-treated lumber is due to the water added during the treatment process. As the wood returns to its normal air dried weight over the following weeks or months, it also returns almost to its pre-treated weight. Once it driesthe weight difference between pressure-treated lumber and untreated lumber is entirely due to the weight of the preservative retained in the wood. This weight is minimal.
The maximum additional weight due to preservative is around 1. For much of the pressure-treated lumber available today for residential use, the additional weight will be less. This table is intended to give you an idea as to what pressure-treated wood might weigh at its heaviest, so the values given use the heaviest wood species southern yellow pine, longleaf commonly used to produce pressure-treated lumber, with the highest amount of water commonly added to the wood during treatment close to four gallons, or about 32 lbs.
A stack of "Ground Contact" pressure-treated lumber. Other treatment designations relating to end-use applications include "Above Ground", "Foundation", and "Marine".
The values given in the table are meant to provide a general idea of typical pressure-treated lumber weights, and should not be used if precise values are needed for critical engineering calculations. When precision is necessary, always refer to the specification sheet for the actual, specific product you intend to use, or contact the technical department of the producer.

EcoPile vinyl pilings eliminates the hassle of having to constantly replace pilings weakened by weathering, fungal, and wood-boring. Since the piling is a vinyl-composite, the typical natural weathering causes that affect pilings are nonexistent.
Additionally, EcoPile vinyl pilings are maintenance free, impact resistant, and protected by a limited year warranty. That is why EcoPile pilings can last upwards of twice what traditional wood pilings.

Alternative to 6"x6" treated lumber for 10' and 12' in ground posts? I have a 40x72 pole barn, 20x72 currently has an upstairs. I want to extend that upstairs portion out to the full 40x I am also going to be building a 6 bay shed to park tractors and a big International truck.
As of right now, I need 12 6"x6"x10' and 40 6"x6"x12', and probably 8 6"x6"x14'- I will be putting them in the ground and they will need to be treated. I considered using telephone poles, but people want as much for telephone poles as they do for new 6"x6".
Is there any other alternative anyone could suggest for in-ground use in place of the 6"x6"? I know that yellow locust is supposed to be a good wood for this, but finding it is nigh impossible anymore- at least in my area. I don't want to do something ineffective destructive like these guys who pour waste oil down by their poles, either. I was told by a builder of wooden sail boats that he takes lumber and soaks it in tar that has been diluted with kerosene. I have several acres of timber on my farm, and I can get 6x6's sawed out for 25 cents a foot if I can I provide my own lumber.
Thank you. This is a machine shop forum, so it comes natural for me to suggest 6x6x. My brother-in-law got a deal on used telephone poles, even got them cut into boards.
Unfortunately, the creosote smell was horrendous and he ended up tearing down the fence that he built from the wood. Rob F.A general rule we used in building material sales figures it at 3.
Ofcourse, this is only a general rule, and may vary due to the amount of retention treated chemical forced into the board and overall moisture of the product.
Some of the newer treatments such as MCA treatment weighs significantly less than some of the older Heavy Retention, because it is supposedly a better preservative and therefore less is needed to adequately protect it from the elements. Different woods will have different weights. On average, the post will weigh about 54 pounds.
